Medicine Beyond Gravity

EDSON OLIVEIRA I MD

The session will explore aerospace medicine, examining the physiological impacts of space travel on the human body, including the emerging considerations of commercial space tourism. It will provide insights into the real-world implications of spaceflight on health and performance. Dr. Edson Oliveira, who graduated from the Lisbon School of Medicine in 2007 and conducted research in Neuroanatomy and Aerospace Medicine, will lead the discussion. He completed his Neurosurgery residency in 2016 at North Lisbon University Hospital Center and has held leadership roles as President of the Portuguese Residents National Council and on the Executive Committee of the Portuguese Medical Association. As Founder and Project Manager of the Center for Aerospace Medicine Studies, he launched Portugal’s first undergraduate Aerospace Medicine course in 2020. He is currently pursuing a PhD on Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome. Dr. Oliveira is a TED speaker, a member of the ESA Medical Board, Team Leader of the Aerospace Medical Association’s Commercial Spaceflight Committee, lectures at the International Space University, and collaborates internationally on space medicine research.

ANA ISABEL PEDROSO I MD

Dr. Ana Isabel Pedroso earned her Medical Degree from the University of Lisbon in 2010 and has since specialized in Internal Medicine (2018) and Intensive Care Medicine (2022), with additional competencies in Emergency and Pre-hospital Medicine, including leadership as VMER Coordinator (2018–2023). She completed postgraduate training in Critical Care Medicine, Medical Aesthetics, and Organizational Well-Being and Happiness, while also serving as a postgraduate lecturer and Advanced Life Support instructor. Author of the book “Para Além do Medo” and speaker of a TED Talk with the same title, Dr. Pedroso’s career bridges patient care, innovation, education, and resilience in medicine.

Inside Aesthetics: From Trends to Treatments 

PEDRO SANTOS I MD

The session will focus on Aesthetic Medicine, exploring how physicians from different specialties can incorporate aesthetic practices into their clinical work and complement patient care. It will highlight the development and application of corrective techniques, showcasing innovative approaches to enhancing both appearance and well-being. Dr. Pedro Santos, a board-certified physician in Aesthetic Medicine recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise will lead the discussion. He currently leads the “Lasers and Other Light Sources” module in the postgraduate program in Aesthetic Medicine at Universidad de Alcalá, having earned his medical degree from ICBAS-UP. In 2019, he completed his specialist training in Stomatology at ULS São João.

MARIA JOSÉ MONTEIRO I MD

The second part of the session will focus on intimate aesthetic Gynaecology, highlighting innovative techniques aimed at improving the quality of life of women. Dr. Maria José Monteiro, a specialist in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, will lead the discussion. She earned her medical degree from the University of Coimbra and completed her specialist training at ULS Gaia/Espinho. Former Clinical Director of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Braga Hospital, Dr. Monteiro is an expert in intimate aesthetic construction, employing advanced technologies such as lasers, hyaluronic acid, biostimulators, PRP, and botulinum toxin to provide patient-centered treatments that enhance both function and well-being.

 

AI in Clinical Practice: Unlocking New Possibilities 

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a promise for the future, it is transforming Medicine today. This Symposium will showcase how cutting-edge technologies are redefining diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. Dr. Miguel Mascarenhas, CEO of DIGESTAID, will present how AI is revolutionizing digestive endoscopy in Portugal, increasing precision in the detection of tumours and lesions. Dr. Ivone Silva, Director of the Vascular Surgery Department at Hospital de Santo António, will share how advanced technology is enhancing safety and efficacy in surgical procedures. Finally, Dr. Pedro Duarte Vaz, researcher at the Champalimaud Foundation and leader of the VOX-PULMO project, will demonstrate how exhaled breath profiling powered by AI could redefine early detection of lung cancer.
